ECOTEC completes the implementation of a new biofilter system designed to treat up to 100,000 m³/h of odors at a municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment plant in Madrid.

 

 

ECOTEC's global supply consisted of the design, manufacture and installation of several key elements detailed here:

 

  • 1 Humidification Tower with dimensions of 3 meters in diameter by 5.5 meters in height, the humidification tower plays a fundamental role in the air treatment process. By spraying a fine mist of water, it helps maintain optimal humidity conditions inside the biofilter system, which favors the growth and activity of the microorganisms responsible for degrading contaminants.

 

  • 1 High Performance Fan with a capacity of 100,000 m³/h that guarantees a constant air flow through the biofilter, promoting a uniform distribution of contaminants and facilitating their effective removal.

 

  • 790 m3 of specially selected biofilter backfill. The biofilter provides an optimal contact surface for the colonization of beneficial microorganisms. This fill is crucial to maximize the contaminant removal efficiency of the system.

 

  • Suction Collectors: The facility has more than 2 km of suction collectors, which ensure efficient capture of contaminants present in the air stream, directed to the biofilter for removal.

 

  • 3021 m2 of GRP covers installed on 4 biofilter basins that protect and maintain the structural integrity of the biofilter system. These covers not only provide corrosion resistance and durability, but also contribute to maintaining a suitable indoor environment for optimal system operation.

 

The new installation allows high effectiveness in the elimination of odors associated with MSW. The combination of aerobic microorganisms present in the biological filter media can degrade a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors (UOE), H2S and NH3, thus complying with environmental regulations and standards.
